Creating the CD, though, is the trickier part. How do you go about it? Do you choose songs that are personal to you and take the listener through the soundtrack of your life? Do you choose songs that you think other people would not already have? Do you choose songs that would not drive you crazy after listening to them for 8 years on the island? Also, how are you listening to these songs -- wouldn't your ipod run out of battery or is this a special solar powered island that magically allows you to have unlimited battery even though the ipod only carries 12 songs?
It's a tough thing to ask, especially from music lovers who had to, for example, purchase a second drive for their computer to store all the music they had.
I found that with each day I worked on the 12 songs, the songs would change depending on my mood or what I was going through at that time. So I've compiled my 12 for THIS time in my life, as of an hour ago.
1. Rhapsody in Blue (Gershwin)
2. It Don't Have to Change (John Legend, featuring Stephens Family)
3. Lucas with the Lid off (Lucas)
4. (If You Can't Sing It) You'll Have to Swing It (Ella Fitzgerald)
5. I Will Not Stop Fighting (Leo Sayer)
6. Dying Day (Brandi Carlile)
7. I'd Rather Go Blind (Etta James)
8. Who Will Be With You When I'm Far Away? (Jimmy Durante)
9. Rome Wasn't Built in a Day (Morcheeba)
10. This is Love (Adam Guettel)
11. Pata Pata (Miriam Makeba)
12. Don't Be Shy (Cat Stevens)
... what's your 12?

This is amazing. I'm going to create a grooveshark playlist with your desert island songs so I can be inspired. I only know "under my skin" would top the list. beyond that, it requires a lot of thought.
Rae, PLEASE post your 12 when you have it - it will be amazing...
